The intense but radiant amber-colored 2002 Pinot Gris Rotenberg Vendange Tardive opens with an intense but pure and elegant nose with ripe stone fruit aromas intermingled with flinty and iron-scented terroir aromas. It's very well defined on the nose and highly stimulating. On the palate, this is a rich and intense, savory and saline-finishing VT from the cooler Rotenberg, which is facing west-northwest and hosts the vines, which average 21 years in age, in red-colored limestone soils. This is very elegant and balanced Pinot with remarkable, almost Riesling-like acidity and finesse and a mineral backbone that uplifts the rich body and makes it taste much less sweet but rather fruity. It has notes of stewed apples and pears with caramel, like tarte Tatin. 14% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023. - Stephan Reinhardt
