If a wine could ever make you want to pull the top down on your '68 Ferrari convertible rip off the rearview mirror and take off this is it. . . Josh Greene

The fruits-grapefruit crisp red apple-balance with a fine yeasty character. There is a great depth of flavor the fruits going in a pure line of freshness. The one problem is that it is much too young the result of the demand from the market for the next vintage. Age this wine for at least four years. - R.V.

Graceful well-delineated aromatics lead to ripe pears spices flowers minerals and mint in this precise Champagne. Today the 2002 appears to have slightly more fruit than the 1996 and perhaps slightly better overall balance although that is splitting hairs at this level. The wine remains fresh and in need of several years of cellaring before it hits its stride. In 2002 Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. 20% of the wine was aged in oak and dosage was 10 grams. This bottle was disgorged in December 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2032.

A very refined bouquet showing a constantly evolving mélange of lime candy lemon sponge cake and creamy butter. The fruit here is bright and polished and the nicely integrated acids propel the flavors towards a richly concentrated conclusion. Despite the powerful flavors there is some lightness here. At the same time the wine as a whole seems a touch disjointed indicating the need for more time in the cellar-after which this astounding fizz will become seamless integrated and even more incredible. Pretty excellent stuff. (L033172C100862)
