One of the finest reds I have ever tasted from New Zealand is the 2002 Le Sol (300 cases of 100% Syrah) which boasts tremendous freshness concentration and intensity. It reveals the acidity and definition of a top-notch northern Rhone as well as tremendous presence on the palate as well as remarkable elegance and precision. Major-league Syrah from New Zealand? You bet. Tips the scales at 15.4% alcohol yet never seems hot. Instead you get a wonderfully balanced wine loaded with cassis and blackberry fruit but also notes of coffee and ground pepper. Chewy tannins on the finish suggest it could age but the wine is soft enough that there's no need to wait.

Ripe exuberant and generous with its raw-edged blueberry currant and plum fruit finishing a bit earthy and with a touch of something like balsamic but well-knit with fine tannins and built to develop with cellaring. Syrah. Best from 2005 through 2008. 400 cases imported. –HS
