Starting with the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve, this wine showed spectacularly on release, closed down for a few years, and has now emerged, at close to full maturity, and is straight-up fabulous. Out of the entire tasting, it remained my favorite. Giving up gorgeous blackberry, currants, garrigue, pepper and beef blood, it hits the palate with a massive, full-bodied texture that carries layers of sweet fruit, awesome concentration and blockbuster length. Tasting like the essence of both this estate and the terroir, it’s an incredible wine that I’m happy to taste/drink anytime. It will continue to evolve gracefully, but I see no reason to delay gratification. - Jeb Dunnuck

The third wine ended up being the 2003 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée and I was thrilled to see it show so well. Having been through over a case of this wine near release, I had not had a bottle for a number of years. Deep, slightly brooding and backwards, it blossomed in the glass and over the evening, showing plenty of roasted garrigue, iron, black fruits, and meaty nuances, full-body, and a thrillingly concentrated, yet still fresh mouth feel. Count me a fan and it still needs another handful of years to fully flesh out. It is one of the top 2003s and a gorgeous example of traditionally made Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Dense and muscular but also luxurious. Best from 2008 through 2030. 5830 cases made. (JM)

This is a super wine and a contender for one of my favorite vintages of Pegau. Fat, rich, dense, lush and packed with layers of perfectly ripe, red and dark red fruits, barnyard, earth, garrigue and peppery spices, this is showing great today and should continue getting even better. The wine was popped and poured. Read more at:https://www.thewinecellarinsider.com/wine-tasting-note/?vintage=2003&wine=Domaine%20du%20Pegau%20Chateauneuf-du-Pape%20Cuvee%20Reservee

Rich, spicy and sweet on the nose, with cherry and blackberry fruit aromas complicated by exotic Asian spices, fresh meat and espresso. This is wonderfully thick, even viscous, but the overall impression is fresh, not tiring, with deep flavors of berries, cherry, dark plum, licorice, garrigue and coffee candy. Expands and puts on weight with aeration, finishing with fully buffered, round tannins. This packs 15.5% alcohol but betrays no heat. -- Josh Raynolds
