The 2003 Barolo Nei Cannubi possesses another dimension of sweetness and depth with plenty of vibrant ripe cherries violets tar spices and toasted oak. Made in a full-bodied generous style it offers superb persistence and a long fresh finish. It is a terrific effort from Einaudi. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2018. Einaudi has produced an especially strong set of Barolos in 2003. Proprietor Matteo Sardagna told me he wasn't convinced about the quality of the vintage at the outset so he decided to use lower percentage of new oak than normal. That turns out to have been a very wise decision as these wines offer superb richness as well as detail the latter of which was particularly hard to come by in 2003. Readers should also consider the estate's Dolcettos which are among the most unique wines being made in the region. The Vigna Tecc is particularly noteworthy and is now labeled under the new Dogliani designation.Importer: Empson USA Alexandria VA; tel. (703) 684-0900

Pure deep red cherry aroma is complicated by raspberry jam hazelnut tar and kirsch notes of laser-like precision. Sweet and lush on the palate with lovely balancing acidity and plenty of yummy red cherry hazelnut and red cherry liqueur flavor. Elegantly styled and not at all roasted for the vintage. Finishes with firm but suave tannins and very good grip. Seems to me to be one of the most successful wines of the vintage which is fairly amazing when you consider that the sand-rich soils of Cannubi (Einaudi's parcel contains much chalk and sand whereas the Costa Grimaldi has more chalk and clay) usually suffer in drought years.
