Smoky redcurrant red plum spices espresso and a hint of game on the musky nose. Sweet smooth and fine-grained with good spice character in the mid-palate. From a new barrel: Nose dominated by black fruits and minerals with a bit more oak char showing. Dense and firmly tannic less showy than the first sample. From a 2002 barrel: Red-ruby. Blackberry blueberry violet and licorice on the nose. Glyceral but firm with sweet dark berry flavors nicely framed by ripe acids. Doesn't show the fat of the samples from new oak but conveys an impression of solid structure and firmness. 89-91 points
