More sweet, ripe and up-front, with a downright sexy profile, the 2003 James Berry Vineyard Bone Rock checks in as a blend of 88% Syrah, 8% Grenache and 4% Mourvedre. From a hot vintage and a time when producers were pushing on the ripeness scale, this blockbuster pulls it off in style and offers up loads of sweet blackberry and kirsch fruit, dried flowers, incense, garrigue and licorice-like aromas and flavors. Showing tons of sweet fruit on the palate, with full-bodied richness and depth, sweet tannin and a great finish, it’s made in an unabashedly pedal-to-the-metal style that won’t appeal to everyone, but I’m a fan. It should continue to put a smile on everyone’s face for another 3-5 years. - Jeb Dunnuck
