Instead it is the wine's elegance and poise that stand out most. In this tasting the 2004 comes across as a modern day 1990 even if the vintage was quite different from a climactic perspective. Sweet roses spices and licorice are all woven together beautifully on the impossibly fine dazzling finish. This is a wine of unbelievable harmony. Proprietor Giuseppe Mazzocolin and longtime oenologist Franco Bernabei have elevated Sangiovese to a level of sophistication rarely seen. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034. I will never forget this once in a lifetime tasting of Felsina's flagship Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia. What started out as a casual survey of a few older vintages turned into a complete vertical as proprietor Giuseppe Mazzocolin and long-time oenologist Franco Bernabei surprised me with bottle after bottle of fabulous Rancias going back to the inaugural 1983...The single biggest takeaway from this tasting is the amazing consistency of the wines across all vintages. Considering its modest price Rancia remains one the most fairly priced cellar worthy wines in the world. -Antonio Galloni

Expressive aromas of blackcurrant plum mint and cigar box all lifted by a mineral element. Dense and rich combining pinot noir-like texture and refinement with syrah-like flavors of rare meat and raspberry liqueur. This boasts a wonderfully tactile feel and a remarkably long palate-staining finish. A great Chianti with loads of personality.

Enough old world style to appeal to any Italian lover crossed with ample ripe bright fruit to turn any red wine drinker into a Chianti lover. Gorgeous dark purple and ruby color in the glass. The dense complex aromas leap out at you: chocolate caramel sweet tobacco mint cassis black cherry plum violets sweet raspberry and just a touch of black truffle earth and leather. Bold and rich on the front palate but with great balance and nice acidity maintaining a beautiful elegance - this is a silent seductress of a wine. The purity of the fruit combined with depth and complexity are fantastic. The flavors mirror the nose leading to a long lingering sweet cherry finish with vanilla and slate notes. Approachable now but enough structure and acid to age at least a decade.
