The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino is a taut powerful offering imbued with iron tar licorice earthiness smoke and dark fruit. This is an especially muscular tense Brunello that is in some ways reminiscent of a Barolo from Serralunga in its intense dark fruit and mineral laced finish. The wine's depth richness and power are all commendable while the balance is simply superb. Patience is the key though. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

Very beautiful and perfumed with ripe strawberry and rose. Full with superfine tannins and wonderful balance. Very long and refined. Best from 2010 through 2015. 650 cases made.

Sexy red berries and mocha on the nose; lower-pitched than the normale initially but displayed higher-pitched notes of violet and bay leaf with extended aeration. Supple suave and nicely delineated even a bit clenched today with a firm mineral underpinning to its deep raspberry and truffle flavors. The subtly long finish features very good grip thanks to sweet but firm tannins and sound acids. Shows more obvious soil tones than the basic bottling but I like that wine's floral and spicy treble notes. This producer excelled in 2004.
