jebdunnuck.com, August 2021

Always showing well, this bottle of 2005 Château Pontet Canet was just about pure perfection in a glass. Still youthful ruby/purple-hued, with a gorgeous core of pure cassis and darker currant fruits, it's full-bodied and...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, July 2016

Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical in London, the 2005 Château Pontet-Canet has long been one of the stars of the vintage and this might well be the best of over a dozen showings of this wine. However, do not expect...

Wine Enthusiast, June 2008

Despite its core of strength and power and obvious aging ability, this is already a delicious wine, with mint aromas, ripe fruit masking the solid tannins. This estate has been on a roll for several years, and this 2005...

Chateau Pontet-Canet is a Fifth Growth Bordeaux wine estate owned by the Tesseron family (of Cognac fame) since 1975. The estate is a rarity in the Medoc, having known only three owners over a course of three centuries.

The vineyard spans 81 hectares in Pauillac, atop an outcropping of Garonne gravel over limestone. After a first trial in 2004, which took place on 14 hectares, Pontet-Canet fully converted the estate to biodynamic agriculture. They obtained organic certification from Ecocert, biodynamic certification from Biodyvin in 2010, and from Demeter in 2014.

Alfred Tesseron uses horses to plow the vineyards of Pontet Canet since they are gentler and lighter than tractors. Because the horses never step in the same place twice, the soils are always aerated in different parts, bringing much needed oxygen to the soil.

The vines have an average age of 40 to 45 years. Their varietal plantings are Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and three parcels of Petit Verdot (2%).

Chateau Pontet-Canet is bright and brilliant with full-bodied fruit, yet finesse, in the mouth. It expresses energy, tension and intensity.

The fruit is fermented with native yeast in semi-conical concrete tanks that facilitate punch-downs. The wine then macerates for an additional four weeks before being removed from the pomace for maturation. One-third of the wine is aged in large, concrete amphorae, designed expressly for Pontet-Canet. The rest ages in French oak barrels.

Introducing the 2005 Pontet-Canet Bordeaux Blend from the esteemed Pauillac region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine is a true gem, exhibiting elegance, complexity, and a remarkable aging potential. With a deep purple color that fades to reddish edges, this wine is visually captivating from the start.

On the nose, the 2005 Pontet-Canet offers a symphony of aromas that entice the senses. Notes of blueberry and boysenberry dominate, accompanied by the subtle nuances of toasty vanilla oak. Delicate hints of fresh mint dance at the edges, adding a refreshing touch. The bouquet is further enhanced by the presence of cassis and oak, perfectly balanced by juicy tannins.

Renowned wine critic Mike Supple, from JJ Buckley, awarded this vintage an impressive score of 94, praising its stunning color and complex nose. Wine Spectator also lauded the 2005 Pontet-Canet, awarding it an outstanding score of 96. They described it as warm, fleshy, and inviting, with flavors of blackberry, fig, and boysenberry compote. Anise, sweet tobacco, and ganache notes provide additional layers of depth, while an iron and cedar spine adds a serious undertone. This wine is truly a masterpiece.

The 2005 Pontet-Canet has received high acclaim from other esteemed publications as well. Wine Enthusiast awarded it a score of 94, praising its mint aromas and ripe fruit that mask the solid tannins. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate bestowed an impressive score of 97, declaring it the best showing of this wine they have encountered. They described it as dense, structured, and masculine, with marvelous freshness and vitality. jebdunnuck.com also gave it an exceptional score of 98, hailing it as pure perfection in a glass.
