Vieux Chateau Certan, sometimes referred to among Bordeaux enthusiasts as “VCC”, is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates of the Pomerol appellation. The estate is located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau, just a few rows of vines away from the bell tower of Pomerol’s famous church. The vines are planted on the famed Gunz terrace with soils made up of large, round pebbles together with different clays over an iron-rich subsoil.

The vineyard covers 14 hectares (35 acres) in a single block, and includes 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignon performs exceptionally well in this terroir and reaches perfect ripeness levels.

With its brilliant velvety color, outstandingly rich aromas, and the depth and subtlety of its flavors, Vieux Chateau Certan is regularly ranked by the world’s press and international tasting panels among the very top wines. It has naturally good concentration and repays cellaring for several years before drinking.

The 2005 Vieux Chateau Certan is a Bordeaux Blend that hails from the prestigious Pomerol region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine showcases a deep, inky blue-purple color that captivates the eye. Produced by the renowned Vieux Chateau Certan, this wine is a true testament to the artistry and expertise of winemaker Alexander Thienpont.

Upon first inhale, the nose is greeted with a rich and sumptuous perfume. Aromas of black olives, lavender, roasted herbs, licorice, and pain grille entice the senses. The bouquet is further enhanced by generous notes of truffles and creme de cassis. As the wine opens up, hints of chocolate and charcoal make a delightful appearance, adding depth and complexity.

On the palate, the Vieux Chateau Certan reveals its true character. The wine exhibits good acidity, ensuring a vibrant and lively mouthfeel. The purity of flavors is outstanding, with the sweet fruit taking center stage. Chewy yet ripe tannins provide structure and balance, resulting in a powerful and full-bodied wine.

This wine embodies the essence of its terroir, displaying a reserved and restrained nature. However, beneath its surface lies incredible depth and potential for development. With its impeccable aging potential, the 2005 Vieux Chateau Certan is expected to reach its peak between 2015 and 2035. It is a wine that rewards patience and will undoubtedly evolve and mature gracefully over the years.

Renowned wine critics have lavished praise upon this exceptional vintage. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it a remarkable score of 95, describing it as a "stunning effort" and predicting a magnificent evolution over the next few decades. Wine Spectator was equally impressed, awarding it a score of 97 and declaring it the best young red ever from this producer. James Suckling echoed these sentiments, awarding it a score of 97 and praising its concentration, freshness, and beautiful length.

The 2005 Vieux Chateau Certan is a wine that demands attention and appreciation. Its impeccable craftsmanship, profound flavors, and extraordinary aging potential make it a true gem in the world of Bordeaux blends.
