The Wine Independent, July 2022

The 2005 Latour is made from 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-brick in color, it gallops out of the glass with incredibly youthful, powerful creme de cassis, blackberry pie, and plum...

How rare to confront a wine of this inner strength and perfect form. Grown at a 116-acre vineyard at the southern border of Pauillac, some of the vines now reaching 100 years of age on a gravel bar overlooking the...

Wine Enthusiast, June 2008

A great wine, the summation of a great vintage in Bordeaux. The core of richness, the dense, bone-dry tannins, the black currants, red berries and black plum skins are the elements, but it's the way they have been...

Very open and beautiful now with currants, light chocolate and spices. Incense as well. Full-bodied, tight and reserved with a fantastic center palate of fruit and firm tannins. Closed and hiding behind the structure and...

Dark ruby black in color. Brilliant, intense aromas of mineral, blackberry and currant, with hints of Indian spices and cigar box, lead to a full-bodied palate, with ultrafine tannins and a beautiful balance of...

Still very closed on the nose, this is a Latour which has all the building blocks coming into place but still has a very long future ahead. Classic Pauillac lead-pencil character with a plush, rich, intense palate of...

Expectations are high when you open a top flight estate in one of Bordeaux’s most revered vintages, and the 2005 Latour, while still being stubborn, is poised to deliver the goods. So many layers to get through, and it...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, February 2015

The Château Latour 2005 has an outgoing and ebullient bouquet with blackberries, wild strawberry, minerals and wilted rose petals. It has great intensity and authority, a bouquet that is polished but not over-buffed. The...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2019

98+ 2005 was a very dry, warm and sunny vintage, causing vine stress in some areas of Bordeaux. Harvested from September 26 to October 6, the tannin/IPT levels were very high this year. The 2005 Latour is blended of 87%...

Chateau Latour, one of Bordeaux’s oldest and most famous wine producers, is a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It’s located in Pauillac near the border with Saint-Julien.

Vines have existed on the property since the 14th century, but Chateau Latour first began producing wines of great quality in the early eighteenth century. The estate gradually came to specialize in wine production, with 38 hectares of vines in 1759 and 47 hectares in 1794.

The vineyard currently has 78 hectares in production. The grapes from the 47 hectares surrounding the chateau, known as “L’Enclos”, are used in the production of the Grand Vin. The 30 hectares outside of the Enclos are used for the Forts de Latour and the Pauillac wines. The estate is planted with about 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot on gravelly hilltops and clay subsoil.

The wines of Chateau Latour need time to mature, generally at least ten or fifteen years, before they can be drunk. It is only then that the full complexity of the bouquet is expressed and the palate becomes sufficiently well integrated to be enjoyable and harmonious.

Introducing the 2005 Chateau Latour, a Bordeaux Blend hailing from the esteemed Pauillac sub-region of Bordeaux, France. With its deep, inky red hue that doesn't fade, this wine exudes an air of elegance and sophistication. Produced by the renowned Chateau Latour, this wine is a true representation of their commitment to excellence.

On the nose, the 2005 Chateau Latour reveals enticing aromas of cool minty dark chocolate, complemented by bold notes of dark plum and black cherry. The bouquet is complex and beautiful, captivating the senses with its richness and depth. Despite its relatively young age, this wine is surprisingly open, allowing its intricate layers to unfold.

The palate of this Bordeaux Blend is full-bodied and rich, showcasing a well-integrated tannic structure that adds to its overall complexity. Silky smooth upon entry, the wine displays a perfect balance of acidity, with layers of small red cherries, raspberry, and cedar coming into play. As the wine lingers on the palate, hints of graphite emerge, revealing its startling architecture.

Renowned wine critics have praised the 2005 Chateau Latour, further solidifying its status as an exceptional wine. Wine Spectator awarded it a staggering score of 99, commending its intense aromas of mineral, blackberry, and currant, as well as its ultrafine tannins and beautiful balance. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also bestowed a score of 98+, describing it as an epic wine with muscular fruit and a savory, floral-infused finish.

This wine possesses incredible aging potential, with experts suggesting that it will continue to evolve and improve over the next few decades. However, if you simply can't resist the temptation, it can be enjoyed now with careful decanting to fully reveal its hidden depths.

In conclusion, the 2005 Chateau Latour is a wine of exceptional quality and character. Its bold flavors, elegant structure, and impressive longevity make it a true gem in the world of Bordeaux. Whether you choose to savor it now or cellar it for future enjoyment, this wine is sure to leave a lasting impression.
