Firm plum in colour, this grabs you straight off the bat. A beautifully rich nose, still young with a relatively closed tannic frame, will open further over the next few years, but the silky depths to the texture are...
DC 96

Decanter, May 2023

Somewhat similar to the 2010 vintage in terms of tannic power, but more relaxed, revealing burgeoning tertiary, leafy tobacco elegance, making it more enjoyable to drink today. A powerful wine with impressive tannin.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, February 2015

The Domaine de Chevalier 2005 has a powerful and quite burly bouquet with sumptous black fruit laced with truffle, cedar and a touch of juniper berry. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. This is an...

Domaine de Chevalier of the Pessac-Leognan appellation is classified as a Grand Cru Classe de Graves. The property belonged to the Ricard family from 1865 until it was purchased by its current owners, the Bernard family, in 1983. It is one of a very few Bordeaux estates to have kept its “domaine” title instead of using the the more popular “chateau” designation.

The estate covers a hundred hectares, of which 45 are under vine: 40 for the property’s red wines, and 5 for its whites. The vineyards are planted with 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot for the red wines, and 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon for the white wines. Soils are dark sand and fine white gravel.

Domaine de Chevalier has been run since acquisition by Olivier Bernard, who perpetuates that spirit of balance and the constant drive for perfection which have been the hallmark of their outstanding wines. The flagship red belongs to the elite of the great classified growths of Bordeaux, while the white is recognized as one of the world’s finest dry wines. The domaine also produces red and white second wines under the Esprit de Chevalier label, which are made from the estate’s young vines.

Olivier Bernard has this to say about his red wines: “Domaine de Chevalier rouge has good structure and a great deal of finesse, complexity, and aging potential – which does not exclude a smooth, fruity quality that makes it enjoyable in its youth. Always balanced, never aggressive, power is by no means the priority...”

Assistant General Manager, Rémi Edange adds: “Chevalier’s red wines are well-structured with round, very fine, tight-knit tannin... They are tremendously elegant and distinguished with a very long aftertaste and more delicacy than power...”

The 2005 Domaine de Chevalier is a remarkable Bordeaux Blend from the renowned Pessac Leognan sub-region of Bordeaux, France. This wine is a true classic, earning high praise from wine critics and enthusiasts alike. With a deep red color that is reminiscent of firm plum, this wine immediately captures the eye.

On the nose, the 2005 Domaine de Chevalier displays a complex bouquet of floral blackberry, mineral notes, and a hint of fresh tobacco. These aromas are further enhanced by subtle nuances of truffle, cedar, and a touch of juniper berry, adding depth and intrigue to the overall profile.

On the palate, this wine showcases a medium-bodied structure with remarkably silky tannins. It is beautifully proportioned and effortlessly glides across the tongue. The oak is seamlessly integrated, contributing to the wine's overall elegance. As it builds in the mouth, flavors of blackberry, blackcurrant, and liquorice come to the forefront, accompanied by a refreshing mint freshness that adds complexity and depth.

The 2005 Domaine de Chevalier has received high scores from esteemed wine publications. Wine Spectator awarded it an impressive 93 points, praising its fine polished texture and long, caressing finish. Neal Martin's Wine Journal gave it an outstanding score of 95, highlighting its powerful bouquet and seamless integration of oak. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also bestowed a score of 95, describing it as a glorious wine with silky tannins and a long, multi-dimensional finish.

The most recent review by Jane Anson rates this wine at an exceptional 97 points, declaring it as one of the all-time greatest Chevaliers. She notes its relatively closed tannic frame that will open further over the next few years, emphasizing its pure class and undeniable quality.

Decanter also highly recommends the 2005 Domaine de Chevalier, giving it a score of 96. They compare it to the powerful 2010 vintage but highlight its more relaxed nature and burgeoning tertiary, leafy tobacco elegance.

Overall, the 2005 Domaine de Chevalier is a wine of exceptional quality and distinction. With its complex aromas, silky texture, and impressive longevity, this wine is a true testament to the craftsmanship and terroir of the Pessac Leognan region. It is a must-buy for collectors and wine enthusiasts who appreciate the finest expressions of Bordeaux blends.
