Dark in color with intense aromas of blackberry tar and mineral. Almost minty. Full-bodied with loads of ripe fruit and vanilla bean character. Long and supercaressing. The 2005 Faugeres has a very ripe, mulberry and licorice-scented bouquet that only just manages to contain some volatile acidity that detracts from its delineation. The palate is quite agreeable: modern in style but balanced, more reined in than the nose with licorice-infused red fruit, espresso and dark chocolate notes towards the finish. It does not have the complexity of the finest 2005 Saint Emilion wines and the aftertaste feels a little short. However, it has a sense of place and the finish is nicely focused. You could broach this now or leave it for 8-10 years. Tasted September 2016. - Neal Martin
