I was deeply impressed with the sheer level of richness and body here. Round sweet and caressing through to the finish Fuligni's 2005 Brunello di Montalcino offers exceptional elegance and a long polished close to round things out. Sweet red cherries subtle hints of French oak and tobacco linger on the long impeccable close. This is a wonderful Brunello that can be enjoyed upon release or cellared; either way it is drop-dead gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025.What a joy it is to taste these new releases from Fuligni. The Brunellos in particular are both exceptional for their respective vintages. The wines capture a middle ground between modern and traditional styles that is immensely appealing.

($78) Offers incense on the nose with lots of dried dark fruits and mahogany as well as subtle hints of cedar. Full-bodied with a solid core of sweet fruit and an aftertaste of strawberry citrus and dark chocolate... I like so much the slight austerity yet subtle and thoughtful fruit to this. Full-to-medium body with fine tannins. Fresh and pretty. Needs time to open. Be patient. Fuligni always delivers. Best after 2012.

Label

Fuligni Brunello is the result of carefully selected grapes coming from low yields per hectare. It is not produced in years when the quality of the harvested grapes is not suitable to maintain the high standards of the estate. It is aged for four years, of which approximately two and a half are in wood.

Fuligni’s regular Brunello di Montalcino–with its elegant combination of fruit and spicy aromas–can age, but is designed for early drinking.

Winery

Fuligni

Fuligni is a family-owned estate on the eastern side of Montalcino. The vines, which extend over ten hectares, are primarily located at Cottimelli with altitudes varying from 1,250 to 1,500 feet. Average age of the vines is about twelve years with some dating back more than thirty years. The estate’s four vineyards are planted with Sangiovese, complemented by a small portion of Merlot.

The Fuligni range consists of the regular Brunello, a Brunello Riserva, a Rosso (Ginestreto), and an IGT Toscana made from a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot.
