(BH91-94 points) A completely different nose with fruit that runs toward the black and plum side of the aromatic spectrum nuanced by hints of Asian spice and warm earth that can also be found on the lacy, detailed and pure flavors that culminate in a linear and distinctly ripe yet velvety finish. This is a big Volnay but one that remains impeccably balanced and all one needs is a good cellar and ample patience.

(WA91-92 points) From yet another Prieur monopole, the 2005 Volnay Clos des Santenots displays ravishingly intense aromas and flavors of black raspberry and cassis, with dark chocolate, wet stone, graphite, chalk, and salts lending layers of complexity. A bit tannic and marked by toasty barrels in the finish, this might turn out to taste overdone in its sweetness for some tastes, but certainly there is ample mineral complexity. - David Schildknecht
