I thought the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon was even stronger than the 2004. The wine has remarkable intensity an inky bluish/purple color to the rim and a stunning nose of acacia flowers interwoven with blueberry and blackberry espresso roast and pain grille. The wine is rich full-bodied has the somewhat European-like structure of this vintage but exceptional generosity richness and depth. It is certainly an impressive Cabernet Sauvignon (there is a some Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in the final blend). This wine should age nicely for 20-25 years.

Firm rich and polished up front before the tannins weigh in framing the dried currant and loamy earth flavors--and even when they do they're supple and integrated. Best from 2010 through 2016. 467 cases made.

A fat sexy fruit bomb of a cabernet with a dominant flavor of black cherry. Mostly from late-ripening vines in the cool Coombsville area. In fact at the time of a two-day heat spike in mid-September said winemaker Mark Herold the grapes were still at just 22o Brix and the harvest ultimately took place mostly during the third week of October. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins.

Label

Kobalt Cabernet Sauvignon (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is full-bodied and concentrated with plush tannins.

The winery has used the same vineyards in Coombsville since 2001, with the addition of 15% Stagecoach fruit in the 2013 & 2014 vintages. These vineyard locations are warm and cool down every night, preserving the natural acidity and tannic structure. The must is cold soaked for 48-72 hours and then fermented. Once dry, the Cabernet is aged in 100% new French oak for 22-27 months. All Kobalt wines are unfiltered to preserve the natural intensity of the fruit flavors.

Winery

Kobalt

Kobalt Wines was founded by Kevin Carriker in 1998. With the help of his friend, former-Merus winemaker Mark Herold, he purchased a small vineyard in Coombsville. After a couple of years, again with Mark’s help, Kevin made his first Cabernet Sauvignon.
