Slightly paler than the 2005 grand vin described below. Deep crimson with a broad, smudgy rim. Vigorous nose. The gentle aroma of this second wine leaps out of the glass with a light leafiness on the nose suggesting that the less ripe grapes went into this. Fairly light bodied and just a little angular. Still slightly chewy on the finish but fine in texture with a refreshing menthol note at the very end. ‘I pick Merlot very early,’ Lurton tells us. ‘In 2005 a cool September freshened everything up and gave us subtle tannins. Merlot was a great success.’ 17/20

Cheval Blanc's second wine the 2005 Le Petit Cheval possesses some of the character of its bigger sibling. Revealing a slight green streak among the cranberry and black cherry fruit along with medium body and a soft plush texture it is ideal for drinking over the next decade.

Has a gorgeous nose of blackberry sweet tobacco and green olive. Medium- to full-bodied with seamless tannins and a long pretty finish. Needs a little more concentration to be outstanding. Already very enjoyable. The second wine of Cheval-Blanc. Best after 2011. -JS
