"97 points - This is the most pure bred and aristocratic of all Australian chardonnays. It has awesome power grace depth and finesse; pure grapefruit nectarine and peach-flesh aromas are framed by complex toasty grilled nuts; the palate is amazingly concentrated yet portrays a lightness that is completely beguiling and incredibly long." The 2005 Art Series Chardonnay was an incredible vintage now giving a considerable array of complex savory pleasantly musky / meaty aromas with some marmite pineapple tart orange peel and ethereal flower and earth characters. The palate is at once elegance and power. Full bodied and rich with a satin mouth-feel it has a very long and layered finish. Tantalizingly delicious now it should continue to evolve and shine to 2018+. -Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Its opulent expression of pineapple grapefruit guava and mango-like fruit knits effortlessly with creamy bacony vanilla and slightly smoky oak while its underpinned by a chalky mineral texture and punctuated by a chiselled citrusy acidity. While there's a hint of spirity heat and sweetness at the finish of its exceptionally long and complete palate it's a stunning exercise in power and control. A complex bouquet offers ripe smoky tangerine candied ginger honey anise and nutmeg. Weighty orchard fruit flavors firm up with air taking on candied lemon lime and pear skin character. The spiciness builds and carries into an impressively broad clinging finish. Leaves vibrant citrus and mineral notes behind eventually. Recently tasted bottles of this wine going back to the 1987 showed no sign of decline and in fact were almost shockingly youthful.

Initially a bit closed on the nose aromas of restrained fruit appear at first whiff and there is scarcely a hint of the full French barrel fermentation and aging regime. After a few minutes in the glass untoasted almond and fragrant blossom notes emerge. The palate is explosive in terms of weight when compared to the bouquet. The wine is elegant and restrained but the power and intensity will catch you unawares. All the flavors are integrated and balanced but there is a tension as if the power has yet to be revealed. Experience tells me that the punch from this heavyweight is coming down the track. Finishes with nice crisp acidity. Don't overchill this beauty feel free to decant it even. This vintage probably needs a few more years to show everything and ten years is an easy jaunt towards greatness.

Label

The “Art Series” represents Leeuwin’s most opulent & age-worthy wines from each vintage. They are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian artists.

Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay is aromatically complex and packed with flavor but maintains vivid acidity. The wine is fruit forward, typically citrus-driven but also showing pear and nuances of stone fruit. Oak-aging adds depth and gentle accents, such as cinnamon, but no overt woody notes. The wines easily age, and improve, for a good 15 years.

Winery

Leeuwin Estate

Leeuwin Estate is a family-owned Australian winery and one of the five founding wineries in the now famous Margaret River district of Western Australia. Formerly a cattle ranch, the property was converted to vineyards by Denis and Tricia Horgan upon the advice of legendary Napa Valley winemaker Robert Mondavi when he visited Australia and saw the estate’s potential as being ideal for the production of premium wines.

The estate enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979 and was quickly thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay. Leeuwin now exports to 30 markets. The estate releases wines under the Art Series, Prelude Vineyards and Siblings labels.

Celebrating the combination of fine wine, food, art and music, Leeuwin features an award winning restaurant, cellar door and art gallery. The estate is renowned for staging spectacular events and welcoming visitors from around the world.
