This is a beautiful 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve from Mondavi. The wine, a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc, has a youthful, opaque bluish/purple color and a classic nose of lead pencil shavings, crème de cassis, licorice, and subtle, toasty French oak. Some chocolate also makes an appearance. Approachable, this full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and handsome Cabernet Sauvignon strikes me as one of the superb efforts the Mondavi Winery has produced, and should age effortlessly for another 20+ years. Given the bevy of $200+ Napa Cabernets these days, at $135.00, this is not a best buy, but it’s certainly a compelling price point, given this stunner. Drink it over the next 20 years. P.S. Once again, the vintage’s incredible freshness, vibrancy and precision are well displayed in this wine and, as I have indicated so many times in this horizontal, this is a striking characteristic in the manner the 2005s have evolved. - Robert M. Yet it's also very tannic and far from being drinkable. Shows a vast repository of black currant blackberry black cherry and new oak flavors wrapped into a smooth velvety mouthfeel whose finish goes on forever. Masculine and authoritative it should continue to improve for many years. Drink now with decanting and through 2017 at least. - Steve Heimoff

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is in a beautiful place right now. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is in a beautiful place right now. Mocha, espresso, worn-in leather, menthol, game, sage, tobacco, black plums and licorice are some of the many notes that inform this supple, juicy Cabernet Sauvignon. At nearly ten years of age, the 2005 is just beginning to enter its early tertiary stage, but it also has more than enough depth and structure to support at least another decade in the cellar.

For Mondavi’s Reserve Cabernet, grapes are hand-harvested with three stages of strict sorting: first, on the vine, then by individual clusters, and then again by single berry following de-stemming. The selected grapes go directly into traditional French oak tanks for cold soak, fermentation and extended maceration–a total of 35 days of wine to skin contact–maximizing the extraction of varietal character and complexity while keeping tannins round and supple. The new wine is drained and gently pressed into 100% new French-oak barrels for malolactic fermentation, assuring seamless integration of fruit and oak. The final blends are assembled through repeated tasting trials over twenty months of barrel aging.

Winery

Mondavi, Robert

Robert Mondavi Winery is a leading California wine producer established by its namesake in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the world’s finest. He chose To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home for the winery. The historic vineyard, located in Oakville, California, is renowned for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world, as well as for its Sauvignon Blanc grapes, from which Mr. Mondavi crafted his signature wine, Fumé Blanc.

Beyond the To Kalon Vineyard, Robert Mondavi Winery sources grapes from some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyards, including Stag’s Leap (Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc) and Carneros (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay).

Robert Mondavi was instrumental in bringing worldwide recognition for the wines of the Napa Valley and promoted the labeling of wines varietally which is now the standard for New World wines. One of his most important collaborations was with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, creating Opus One, which has become one of California’s icon Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

For 5 decades, Robert Mondavi Winery has led California’s wine industry, and much of the world, with innovations in winemaking and winegrowing.

The Robert Mondavi brand was acquired by Constellation Brands in 2004 and following its sale, Robert Mondavi partnered with his younger son Tim and daughter Marcia to create Continuum Estate. Robert Mondavi passed away in 2008 at the age of 94.
