An amber-colored robe dresses the 2005 Trockenbeerenauslese, a barrique-fermented blend of 70% Riesling, 20 % Grüner Veltliner and 10% Neuburger with Chardonnay, which was bottled in April 2010 with 10.5% alcohol and 211 grams of residual sugar. This subtle, yet multi-flavored TBA with its elegant potted stone fruit, lemon tea, candied orange, nut and honey flavors along with apple syrup, dried porcini and white-pepper powder on the nose, is one of the very rare food-TBA's which is more dominated by its elegance, freshness, vitality and firm mineral structure than its thick sweetness and concentration. Sure, this wine is undeniably sweet, but rather bittersweet, enormously fresh (9 grams per liter of acidity), mineral, and provided not just with honey and chutney, but also whole-grain or Pumpernickel flavors, which lend a complex and spicy taste and finish. This is the kind of TBA that I was neither willing nor able to spit because it is so full of finesse and extremely drinkable. 450 liters made. - Stephan Reinhardt
