Wine Enthusiast, October 2010

From one of the most beautiful and historic estates in Montalcino Argiano's Brunello is redolent of cherry cassis exotic spice smoke and very tame delicate oak notes of toasted vanilla. The wine is bright and polished...

Wow. I find this has a solid core of ripe fruit and a forest floor character on the nose and palate. Full and silk with lots of everything on the finish. Yet it's subtle and refined. Try it after 2013.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2010

The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is a soft delicate wine with good delineation in its aromas and fruit qualities that resonate through to the harmonious refreshing close. Sweet pipe tobacco licorice and flowers add a sense...

($57) Full-bodied with grilled steak and ripe plum aromas round polished tannins and very pretty fruit on the finish. Balanced and opulent. Best after 2010. 9815 cases made.

The Argiano estate extends across an area of about 125 hectares, occupied by vineyards, olive groves and natural forest. The birth of the estate is revealed by the construction of its villa, fashioned in the 16th century architectural style, and is thought to have been built between 1581 and 1596. Winemaking also developed at about the same time.

Ownership changed hands several times over the centuries among various noble families, until the estate came into the possession of Lady Ersilia Caetani Lovatelli in the 19th century. Under her enlightened management, the wines were promoted successfully in the finest cultural circles of the time.

In 1967, Argiano helped form the new history of Brunello di Montalcino when it participated with other historic wineries in the foundation of the Brunello Consortium. In 1992, the estate was acquired by Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano who introduced important innovations into the winery’s management. The estate changed ownership again in 2013 when it was sold to a group of Brazilian businessmen, who continued to make improvements and expand the estate vineyard holdings.

Since 1888, only the finest Sangiovese Grosso grapes grown on the estate have been used to make Argiano Brunello di Montalcino. Grapes are selected from the most noble vineyard plots, vinified, then aged for 1 year in both French oak barriques and tonneaux. In the 2nd year, the wine is transferred to large Slavonian oak barrels, which allow the wine to achieve balance. Finally, after completing 2 years of maturation in wood, the wine is transferred into concrete tanks.

The combination of concentrated, ripe grapes undergoing fermentation at meticulously controlled temperatures, together with careful ageing in a selection of different oak barrels, produces red wines that conserve that incredible aging potential for which Brunello di Montalcino is famous for.
