janeanson.com, February 2022

More knitted down than the 2005, in the 2002, 2004 vein, with firm tannins, even if they are now melted and integrated, and a sense of control. Dark berry fruits with smoked earth, undergrowth, soot, powerful but subdued...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2016

Truffle, blackberry, smoke, menthol and herbs offer the aromatic profile. Soft and round textured for the vintage, the wine is approachable today with its fresh, sweet blackberry and cassis personality. Read more...

Vinous, May 2009

Ruby-red. Sexy aromas and flavors of black- and redcurrant, menthol, licorice and nutty oak, lifted by a violet topnote. Supple, classically dry and quite concentrated, with juicy acidity giving cut to the flavors and...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2016

Tasted at the château, the 2006 Château Saint-Pierre has a ripe blackberry, kirsch, cedar and liquorice-scented bouquet that feels as if it is approaching its drinking plateau. The palate is sweet on the entry with...

Wine Spectator, March 2009

This offers blackberry jam, with licorice and floral undertones. Full-bodied and chewy, with slightly austere tannins, but also fleshy and well-structured. A textbook claret. Should age nicely. Best after 2014. — JS

The smallest of the Saint-Julien crus, Chateau Saint-Pierre was first established in the 17th century, although a number of legacies subsequently led to the property being split up and dispersed. In 1982, through a combination of good luck and tenacity, current proprietor Henri Martin, who owned neighboring Chateau Gloria, was able to put the estate back together the way it had been in 1855, the year of the famous classification.

Ever since, thanks to the investments made by the owners, Saint-Pierre has been acknowledged as a perfect representative of the Grands Crus Classes of the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation. The estate vineyards, located in the middle of the commune of Beychevelle. These, cover 17 hectares which are planted with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, on soils of Gunzian gravel over clay and sand, and an average vine age of 50 years.

The grapes for Saint-Pierre’s red wine are picked by hand and vinified in the traditional way in heat-regulated stainless steel vats. The wine then spends 14 to 16 months being aged in casks, half of which are replaced every year. The wine is typically a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.
