The 2006 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape has shed a fair bit of the baby fat and concentration that it possessed on release, showing a much more classic expression than the behemoth it was. Beautiful spice, kirsch, licorice, and garrigue are framed by serious underling minerality and charred earth on the nose. This is followed by a full bodied, well-structured wine that fleshes out with air, showing perfect ripeness and nothing out of place. While superb, especially with air, this still needs another 3-5 years for prime time drinking.

Highly expressive aromas of raspberry, cherry, lavender, smoked meat and minerals. Racy and sharply focused, with juicy red and dark berry flavors, silky texture and a gentle candied floral quality. Impressively pure and balanced, with outstanding finishing clarity and lingering sweetness. Does this ever really finish? By no means a blockbuster, but delivers very serious palate impact.

NB vintage. Another great year – as good as 2005 and 2007 for Avril. Deep crimson. Some gaminess on the nose and absolutely delicious now. Great roundness and energy. Great complete wine already drinking beautifully... NB vintage. Another great year – as good as 2005 and 2007 for Avril. Deep crimson. Some gaminess on the nose and absolutely delicious now. Great roundness and energy. Great complete wine already drinking beautifully. Spice and lift and masses of fruit. Polished and gorgeous now. 18.5/20

From the normal tiny yields of this estate (on the order of 22 hectoliters per hectare), the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape from Paul-Vincent has shed its baby fat and now shows a supple, elegant, seamless profile that's hard to resist. Kirsch, licorice, garrigue and sweet spice all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced 2006. It benefits from a short decant, and while showing plenty of maturity, it will evolve gracefully for at least another decade. - Jeb Dunnuck
