This very well-crafted wine serves as a welcome reminder that depth and density are not antithetical to refinement and grace. From its rich nicely layered aromas of cherries cocoa and sweet oak to its impressively extracted flavors it exhibits a good sense of proportion and never lets ripeness trump its well-defined fruit. It progresses effortlessly to a long lightly tannic finish and is bound to age quite comfortably.

The 2006 Walter Clore Private Reserve is composed of 66% Merlot and 34% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 30 months in new French oak. It exhibits notes of pain grille pencil lead damp earth herbs and balsamic. This leads to a full-bodied ripe layered wine with excellent depth concentration and length. Give it 3-4 years to fully blossom and drink it from 2013 to 2026.

Forward aromas of plum anise pencil lead and vanillin give way to hints of eucalyptus and saddle leather. The initial palate is dominated by cocoa powder and mocha with an attack of crushed dark fruit emerging as the wine coats the mouth and fleshes out nicely on the finish. This 66% merlot 34% cabernet sauvignon blend is all about elegance complemented beautifully by viscous yet polished heaps of bright fruit. Though drinking nicely now give this wine a year or to to really come together.
