This American-owned estate produces one of the most impressive wines made in Fronsac. Fashioned primarily from Merlot, the saturated ruby/purple-colored 2006 reveals superb sweet kirsch, black currant, licorice, forest floor, and earth characteristics, a textured, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, sweet tannin, and a long finish. Another super-star Fronsac, it, like virtually every wine from this appellation, sells at a realistic price. It is the perfect wine in these troubled economic times. Drink it over the next 10-12 years. Excellent value. - Robert Parker

Still showing a deep opaque core, even at 10 years of age. The aromas have started pushing into secondary aromatics showing a savory edge of dried herbs and bakers chocolate, yet still carrying underlying fresh fruit with black cherry and raspberry notes. On the palate the texures is soft and rounded with well integrated tannins giving medium body and a plush mouth feel. This is spectacular value in perfectly aged 10 year old Bordeaux. Just enough savory elements balanced against fresh red to black fruits, this can be opened and enjoyed immediately, yet has what is needed to continue to perform well for another 5-10 years.

Label

Chateau la Vieille Cure holds 74% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. This mix, coupled with the sunny vineyard facing, makes the wines accessible at a young age. While some vintages benefit from waiting 10 or more years, most are best appreciated between 4 and 6 years.

Winery

La Vieille Cure

Chateau La Vieille Cure is in Fronsac, an AOC on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Wine growing at the chateau dates back to the 17th century. The vines are situated on plateaus and slopes that soak up the sun for generous ripening, with soils predominantly limestone with some chalk and clay.

The property was purchased in 1986 by two American friends and Bordeaux lovers. They replanted part of the vineyard—without touching the very old (over 75 years) vines—and constructed a new winery, equipped with the latest equipment.
