Dense and rich Latour with layered and velvety tannins and gorgeous fruit. At the same time, there’s lots of wood. Coffee flavor, too. Full-bodied, layered and structured. Needs more time to soften the tannins. Try in 2021.

jebdunnuck.com, April 2018

As to the Grand Vin, the 2006 Latour showed beautifully. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance mostly Merlot, with a splash of Cabernet Franc, it offers a deep ruby/purple color to go with straight up classic...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, July 2017

Firm style of Latour with a strictness to the tannins. Full bodied, powerful, tannic, youthful and concentrated, the fruit is fresh, ripe and out in front, but this needs another 10-15 more years before the tannins soften...

Wine Enthusiast, March 2009

Latour has always had the reputation of producing great wines in the less great vintages. The 2006 is a case in point. It brings structure and ripeness into a form that is almost ethereal. That elegance doesn't take away...

Decanter, March 2022

Soft and lush, this perhaps shows a hint of dilution from harvest rains. The texture is firm and dense without being forbidding. It is less angular than the 2007 vintage on the palate, but there is a similar length and...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, January 2011

Served blind at the chateau. The nose on this particular bottle takes time to coalesce, eventually offering smoke, blackberry, a touch of iodine, graphite and earth. Fine definition although very compact and not as...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2019

Not an outstanding vintage overall for Bordeaux, 2006 had the potential to be very good. Things got off to a pretty impressive start in Pauillac this year, and then it all went a bit pear-shaped toward the end with a...

Wine & Spirits, December 2009

In describing the feel of this wine, Lacey Burke of Gotham Bar & Grill said it was "like a cat wrapping around your ankles." Such a sensation clearly separates the '06 Latour from the '05, which is anything but cuddly...

Wine Spectator, March 2009

Offers a pure nose of currant and blackberry with crushed fruit. Full-bodied with a solid core of fruit and very polished refined tannins. Long and classy. Best after 2016. -JS

Vinous, February 2024

The 2006 Latour shows some reduction on the nose, although it soon blows away to reveal pencil-shaving infused black fruit, wild hedgerow and light cassis aromas. The palate offers up a mixture of red and black fruit...

Chateau Latour, one of Bordeaux’s oldest and most famous wine producers, is a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It’s located in Pauillac near the border with Saint-Julien.

Vines have existed on the property since the 14th century, but Chateau Latour first began producing wines of great quality in the early eighteenth century. The estate gradually came to specialize in wine production, with 38 hectares of vines in 1759 and 47 hectares in 1794.

The vineyard currently has 78 hectares in production. The grapes from the 47 hectares surrounding the chateau, known as “L’Enclos”, are used in the production of the Grand Vin. The 30 hectares outside of the Enclos are used for the Forts de Latour and the Pauillac wines. The estate is planted with about 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot on gravelly hilltops and clay subsoil.

The wines of Chateau Latour need time to mature, generally at least ten or fifteen years, before they can be drunk. It is only then that the full complexity of the bouquet is expressed and the palate becomes sufficiently well integrated to be enjoyable and harmonious.

The 2006 Chateau Latour is a stunning Bordeaux blend that exemplifies the elegance and complexity of wines from the Pauillac region of Bordeaux, France. With its deep garnet-purple color and enticing aromas, this wine immediately captivates the senses.

On the nose, the 2006 Chateau Latour offers a pure and expressive bouquet of currant and blackberry, intermingled with crushed fruit notes. These aromas are further enhanced by subtle hints of smoke, graphite, and earth, adding depth and complexity to the wine.

Upon tasting, this full-bodied red wine reveals a solid core of fruit, supported by very polished and refined tannins. The palate is tight but feisty, exuding a youthful and vibrant character that is balanced by a reserved and austere finish. The wine showcases the harmonious intensity that is characteristic of wines from this renowned vineyard, thanks to the superior drainage provided by the deep pile of river stones in the soil.

With an alcohol percentage of 13.0%, the 2006 Chateau Latour has great balance and structure. It has the potential to age gracefully over the next 20+ years, although it is already drinking beautifully now. The wine's minerality and strength are derived from its luscious yet muscular tannins, which hold an air of mystery.

Renowned wine critics have praised the 2006 Chateau Latour for its exceptional quality. Wine Spectator awarded it a score of 95, describing it as "long and classy" with a solid core of fruit. Neal Martin's Wine Journal also awarded it a score of 95, highlighting its fine definition and vibrant character. Wine & Spirits praised its gravity and harmonious intensity, while Robert Parker's Wine Advocate commended its elegance, minerality, and great length.

In conclusion, the 2006 Chateau Latour is a remarkable wine that showcases the best of Pauillac. Its depth, complexity, and refined tannins make it a truly exceptional Bordeaux blend. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for the future, this wine promises an unforgettable tasting experience.
