Decanter, November 2018

Since 1959 the estate has kept 50% of production back for a second release when the wine is ready to drink, and this vintage has not yet seen its mature release (they are currently on the 2004). You can see why - it's an...

jamessuckling.com, July 2021

Aromas of blackberries, black olives, raspberries, iodine and asphalt follow through to a medium to full body with a tight, layered palate and a juicy finish. Hints of iodine at the end. Some licorice, too. Drink now.

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2016

Powerful, mouth filling, tannic and concentrated, most of this wine is being held back in reserve, waiting for the day when the tannins are resolved, the secondary notes can jump to the forefront and the wine softens its...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, August 2022

The 2006 Léoville Las Cases is muscular and uncompromising, unwinding to reveal aromas of dark berries, cassis, burning embers, espresso roast, exotic spices, loamy soil and toasty oak. Full-bodied, rich and extracted...

Wine Enthusiast, March 2009

While the aromas are tight and firm, once it is in the mouth, this wine just explodes. The tannins are dark, almost impenetrable, dry and dense. These tannins are a layer over the fruit that just piles up with ripe...

Wine Spectator, February 2009

Offers a pure nose of crushed raspberry and violet with aniseed. Full-bodied with beautiful well-integrated tannins and a long polished texture to the finish. Very beautiful. Harmonious and structured. Best after 2015. -JS

One of the oldest Medoc estates, Domaine de Leoville belonged to some of the wealthiest and most influential noble French families before it was acquired by the Las Cases family. Like many properties after the French Revolution, the estate was divided between 1826 and 1840 into the three Leovilles we know today: Leoville-Las Cases, Leoville-Poyferre and Leoville-Barton.

Chateau Leoville-Las Cases was created, thanks to a kind of birthright, from three-fifths of the original estate, including the very heart of the property. The Grand Vin has therefore been sourced from the best part of the original terroir since the 17th century.

Pierre Jean, Adolphe, and Gabriel de Las Cases were successive heirs to the property until 1900, when Theophile Skawinski purchased a share in the estate and became its manager. Leoville-Las Cases has now been managed by the same family since the late 19th century and is today represented by Jean-Hubert Delon, sole owner of the chateau and proprietor of Chateau Potensac in the Medoc and Chateau Nenin in Pomerol.

The Grand Vin is the product of exceptional terroirs from the heart of the original Leoville estate. These are located mainly in the Clos Leoville-Las Cases, which you pass as you leave the village of Saint-Julien for Pauillac. They extend over nearly 60 hectares producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with a complex, polished expression and characteristics which are totally unique to the Grand Vin of Las Cases.

The 2006 Leoville-Las Cases is a Bordeaux Blend that showcases the elegance and complexity of the renowned Bordeaux region in France. With a deep red color, this wine is visually striking and immediately draws you in. The wine is enclosed with a traditional cork closure, adding to the sense of tradition and craftsmanship that goes into each bottle.

On the nose, this wine offers a pure and intense aroma of crushed raspberries and violets, with a subtle hint of aniseed. These aromas create a sense of sophistication and refinement, setting the stage for what is to come.

Upon tasting, the 2006 Leoville-Las Cases reveals its true character. Full-bodied and well-structured, this wine boasts beautifully integrated tannins that provide a smooth and polished texture. The palate is filled with flavors of dark berries, cassis, and burning embers, which are complemented by notes of espresso roast, exotic spices, and toasty oak. This complexity is a testament to the meticulous winemaking techniques employed by the renowned producer, Leoville-Las Cases.

The 2006 Leoville-Las Cases has received high praise from wine critics and publications. Wine Spectator awarded this wine an impressive score of 95, describing it as harmonious and structured, with a long and polished finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also awarded it 95 points, noting its muscular and uncompromising nature, as well as its considerable depth and concentration.

Decanter magazine highlights the exceptional quality of this vintage, noting that it still needs time in the cellar to fully reveal its potential. Wine Enthusiast describes the wine as explosive, with dense and impenetrable tannins that provide a layer over the ripe blackberry and blueberry flavors. Jeff Leve of TheWineCellarInsider.com recognizes the wine's power and concentration, as well as its potential for aging.

Overall, the 2006 Leoville-Las Cases is a wine of exceptional quality and complexity. With its elegant aromas, beautifully integrated tannins, and layers of flavors, this wine is a true masterpiece from the Bordeaux region. It is a wine that demands patience and rewards those who cellar it for years to come.
