Concentrated aromas of stone fruit, honeydew, toasted almonds and crushed stones on the flinty nose of the matured 2006 Riesling Federspiel Vom Stein are followed by a pure, intense and elegant palate full of tension and great terroir expression. This full-bodied wine is really complex and quite powerful for the Federspiel category but – not very typical in 2006 – it is also amazingly fresh and vital, whereas the persistently mineral finish is very intense and still promising. There are some similarities to dry, mineral Chenin Blancs from the Layon (Anjou) and I am curious to learn how this wine will develop over its second decade, but today this is already a great Austrian Riesling, which I highly recommend. - Stephan Reinhardt
