A mix of sweet cherry raspberry floral tobacco tea and balsamic flavors mingle in this complex and layered red. The acidity and tannins are present and well-integrated as this remains elegant and harmonious on the lingering finish. There's a racy aspect with a tobacco and mineral aftertaste. Best from 2016 through 2035. 923 cases made. - BS

Today the 2006 is quite accessible. I will be surprised if it doesn't start shutting down at some point. Regardless the 2006 appears to be built more on finesse rather than power. Freshly cut flowers hard candy and licorice are layered into the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2046.Biond-Santi remains a beacon for traditionally made Rosso and Brunello. At 90 years of age Franco Biondi-Santi insisted on leading my tasting of wines from cask and bottle. The years go by for all of us but I haven't seen any decrease in Biondi-Santi's enthusiasm and passion. The Biondi-Santi wines are more approachable young than they used to be but little else appears to have changed. Biondi-Santi harvests on the early side. The wines see long macerations on the skins - in steel for the straight Brunello (also known as the Annata) and oak for the Riserva - and are then aged in large oak casks.

Very long powerful and intense. Needs time to come together with the acidity. Better after 2015.

Biondi-Santi performs exceptionally well in elegant vintages like 2006. This wine is balanced and fresh, with lingering notes of wild berry, white cherry, cola, spice and dark chocolate. Age this wine 10 years or more.

Situated just south of the town of Montalcino, the oldest vines at Tenuta Greppo, a total of 12 acres, were planted between 1930 and 1970; another 50 acres have been planted since the 1980s. This Riserva is selected from vines that are at least 25 years old, and it carries the complexity this renowned vineyard can give. Tightly built, it needs a day of air for the scent of roses and freshly turned earth and the roasted cherry tomato juiciness to combine in a long, red glow of flavor. Spicy, intriguing and delicious, the wine will benefit from long aging, or decanting hours before a dinner of roast baby goat.

Deeper shade of maturing ruby with orange. Impressive brooding cherry and earth. Energetic acidity cutting right through the sweet fruit. Seriously tannic but finely grained. Ends succulent and vibrant. Fruit still needs... Deeper shade of maturing ruby with orange. Impressive brooding cherry and earth. Energetic acidity cutting right through the sweet fruit.
