A saturated purple color, it gives off an enthralling nose of pain grille, smoked meat, incense, Asian spices, boysenberry, mulberry, and plum. With exceptional depth, richness, and structure, this impeccably balanced Shiraz can be cellared for another 6-8 years and will offer a drinking window extending from 2014 to 2026.

Forget the aroma: At this early stage, it's so potently reduced and medicinal you might not venture a taste, which is so intense and feral that you might not make it to the finish, where the wine explodes with vibrant fruit and a cloud of mineral tannin. It's the bounty of fruit that lasts, that coats every pore in the mouth, giving a clear impression that the wine will survive for years, long enough to grow into its monumental structure. Jim Barry planted this northwest-facing vineyard in 1968, now producing the estate's flagship shiraz.

Refuses to let up on the finish, which echoes the sweet blueberry note and leaves spice, pepper and floral notes in its wake. I find this more energetic than the wonderful 2005 and 2004 versions.

Intense dark fruits are placed on a narrow, elegant profile where the slightly rich textures dominate the spine of the palate. Not overly ripe and textured, there are very subtle, fine tannins underneath the fruit and just enough acid in the backpalate to create a finish that fades gently. Another 15 years is no problem here, 2-4 in the short term would show a touch more youthful fruit flavors and broader textures. Classic Clare Valley profile here.
