A sleeper of the vintage the reasonably priced 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 80% Grenache and the rest primarily Mourvedre and a small amount of Syrah. The Grenache is aged in concrete vats and the Syrah and Mourvedre spend time in small barrels. This dense ruby/purple-colored 2007 exhibits a big sweet nose of white chocolate black currants garrigue pepper and Asian spices supple tannins a deep full-bodied mouthfeel and good freshness as well as precision. It is a hefty yet elegant Chateauneuf du Pape that should drink nicely for 10-12+ years.

This modern Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits aromas of black cherry chocolate allspice and red plum followed nicely by subtle aromas of olive coffee and smoked meats. Massive entry with loads of dusty dark fruits and savory herbs. The fine grained tannins build nicely. It turns out to be a big wine but not over the top. This is actually one of the few 07s I have found to be drinkable even at this young stage. The finish is defined by kirsch black cherries and tapenade. Super long. Super fresh. -Alex Lallos
