In July 10, 1890, five Riojan and Basque families who shared a passion for wine founded the ‘Sociedad Vinícola de La Rioja Alta’ in Haro's Station Quarter. They erected a winery on the pillars of quality, elegance, innovation, and evolution, enthusiastically sharing the dream of making and aging top-quality Rioja wines. Thus began a pursuit of excellence that continues into the 21st century with identical enthusiasm, combined with the most modern winemaking technology.

La Rioja Alta’s particular 'treasure' is the more than 400 hectares of estate-owned vineyards located in the best terroirs of Rioja. They also manufacture their own barrels from imported American oak (currently about 30,000) using artisanal methods.

Today, the wines of La Rioja Alta are an international exemplar of the great wines of Rioja, and their brands are present in the best restaurants across all continents.

Gran Reserva 904 was originally released as Reserva 1904. It was named to commemorate a very important date for the La Rioja Alta Winery: the proposed merger by Don Alfredo Ardanza of La Rioja Alta and Bodega Ardanza. The” 1” was eventually dropped to prevent confusion with the actual 1904 vintage. In addition, the year 1904 was also considered to be one of the greatest vintages in local history.

Gran Reserva 904 is made only in exceptional vintages, with the best harvests from the oldest vineyards. It’s a classic Rioja at its best and is amongst the finest wines being produced in Rioja today.

The 2007 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 is an exceptional red wine that embodies the elegance and sophistication of Rioja, Spain. This wine is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Mazuelo, aged for four years in well-seasoned American oak barrels, resulting in a polished and silky texture.

In appearance, the wine has a rich and deep red color, enticing the eye with its beauty. The aromas that emanate from the glass are a delightful combination of developed notes of meat, spices, leather, and balsam, intertwined with almost cherry-like aromas. This complex bouquet is a testament to the aging potential of this classic Gran Reserva.

On the palate, the 2007 Gran Reserva 904 reveals its true character. It showcases a perfect balance between its fine-grained and fully resolved tannins, showcasing its elegance and refinement. The acidity adds a vibrant touch, enhancing the overall harmony of the wine. The flavors are bright and focused, with dried cherry, orange peel, vanilla, sandalwood, tobacco, and spice coming together in perfect harmony.

Renowned wine critic Luis Gutierrez of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate was pleasantly surprised by this vintage, awarding it an impressive score of 95 points. Gutierrez commends the wine for its freshness, youngish character, and aging potential. This sentiment is echoed by Wine Spectator, which awarded the wine 93 points, praising its supple nature and elegant rendering of the traditional style.

James Suckling, another esteemed wine critic, was particularly enamored with the 2007 Gran Reserva 904, awarding it a staggering 97 points. Suckling highlights the wine's wonderful purity of fruit, with a strawberry, currant, and plum character. He describes the body as full and velvety, with ultra-fine tannins and a delicious fresh and fruity finish, epitomizing the classic Rioja style.

With only 150,000 bottles produced, the 2007 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 is a rare gem that deserves a place in any wine enthusiast's collection. This wine is ready to be enjoyed now, but its aging potential suggests that it will continue to evolve and impress for many years to come.
