The wine has evolved into a single vineyard pure Merlot. Spice, smoke and berry, with black olives. Full and juicy, with smoked meat and ripe fruits. Long and delicious. Milk chocolate too. Juicy red. Grows on you... The wine has evolved into a single vineyard pure Merlot. Spice, smoke and berry, with black olives. Full and juicy, with smoked meat and ripe fruits. Long and delicious. Pure, refined aromas of fresh blackcurrant, minerals, violet and coffee liqueur. Then pure and suave in the mouth, with excellent density to the blackberry and plum flavors, nicely lifted by hints of iron, flint and violet. Finishes seamless, pure and long, with a persistent note of cassis. This initially seemed mute and shallow but really improved with air, so don't forget to give it plenty of time in the decanter. (The estate's other reds also gain in flesh and depth with an hour or two in the decanter.) This is also in essence a brand-new wine, as Casalferro has now become a 100% merlot. Francesco Ricasoli told me that the quality of the merlot from this 50-acre vineyard was such that he really felt it needed to be bottled separately. -Ian D'Agata

Aromas of crushed blackberry, plum and cassis emerge, along with more subtle notes of graphite, coffee and loamy earth. Light and lively on the palate, the tannins are soft and well-integrated, carrying the fruit through to a pleasant, bright finish. The dark purple fruit lingers on the palate without overpowering the earth and notes of leather. Nicely balanced overall.
