Very sensuous expression of Merlot, with the texture of pure silk and velvet, the wine is rich, deep and long. With a few hours of decanting, this was showing great.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a Bolgheri estate which lies in the heart of Tuscany's coastal region, Maremma, also home to Sassicaia. The estate is one of the icon wineries of Italy, producing some of the finest Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc in Tuscany, grown in the alluvial, volcanic, and marine-based soils which comprise the region’s terroir.

Founded by Marchese Lodovico Antinori in 1981, Ornellaia’s first vineyard plantings were in 1982 and the new winery started operations with the 1985 vintage. Robert Mondavi and Marchesi de' Frescobaldi became co-owners of the estate in 2002, but since 2005, the estate has been exclusively owned by Marchesi de' Frescobaldi.

Grapes which are not designated for the winery’s flagship Bordeaux-styled release Ornellaia, one of the first Super Tuscans, are "declassified" to the production of Le Serre Nuove, which usually has more Merlot, and sees less oak influence. The winery produces several other labels, including Le Volte, a blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a Sauvignon Blanc, Poggio alla Gazze, and Ornus, a sweet, late harvest wine from Petit Manseng.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia also owns the Masseto winery and estate, which produces an equally world-renowned and lauded single-vineyard Merlot.

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to the exquisite 2007 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto. This captivating red wine hails from the esteemed region of Tuscany, specifically the sub-region of Bolgheri, in Italy. Crafted with utmost care and finesse by the renowned producer Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, this wine is a true masterpiece that showcases the exceptional qualities of the Merlot varietal.

In the glass, this wine presents itself with a deep and alluring red color that immediately catches the eye. As you bring the glass to your nose, a symphony of aromas dances before you. Ripe black cherries, blackberries, and cassis take the lead, accompanied by delicate notes of minerals, violets, and French oak. The bouquet is nothing short of extraordinary, exuding sensuality and charm.

Upon the first sip, the wine envelops the palate with a velvety texture that caresses every taste bud. The fruit character is tight and refined, showcasing flavors of licorice, dried violets, blackberries, and blueberries. Subtle hints of cedar add complexity and depth to the already impressive profile. The wine's impeccable balance and structure are a testament to its exceptional craftsmanship.

Let us turn our attention to the critics' verdicts, which only reaffirm the extraordinary nature of this wine. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this vintage a remarkable 96 points, praising its clarity, intensity, and length. Wine Spectator, on the other hand, awarded it a still impressive 93 points, noting its roundness, richness, and the touch of heat on the long finish. James Suckling also bestowed upon it a well-deserved 96 points, highlighting its incredible nose and recommending patience until it reaches its full potential in 2015.

However, it is the perfect score of 100 points from Wine Enthusiast that truly solidifies the exceptional nature of this wine. They describe it as a perfect wine from a classic vintage, with an opulent bouquet of blackberry, cherry, chocolate, vanilla, exotic spice, and cinnamon. The plush, velvety tannins and the long, supple finish make it a valuable addition to any cellar.

In conclusion, the 2007 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto is a wine that demands attention and admiration. Its elegance, complexity, and sheer beauty make it a true gem of Italian winemaking. Whether enjoyed now or carefully cellared for future enjoyment, this wine is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who have the pleasure of experiencing it.
