The thickest, richest and most extravagant Cuvee du Mon Aieul ever produced is unquestionably the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul! Almost all old-vine Grenache brought up in tank (no new wood), it tastes like the raw essence of Grenache and has off-the-hook aromas and flavors of black raspberries, cassis, cured meats, licorice and incense. Massively rich and textured, with a full, layered mid-palate and sweet tannin, it's still an adolescent that drinks well today, due its insane amount of fruit, but will be even better in 2-3 years and have 20-25 years of overall longevity. - Jeb Dunnuck

Powerful dark berry and cherry preserve aromas are complicated by cola underbrush and Indian spices. Lush and creamy with concentrated black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors and a jolt of white pepper on the back. Finishes with mounting sweetness and excellent persistence. This refuses to let go of the palate.

A gorgeous dense shiny purple with a wide purple rim the 2007 'Mon Aeiul' is simply stunning. Packed and stacked with blueberry liqueur sweet vanilla lavender crème brulee and a marine layer it's much more modern than I would have expected-a pleasant surprise. Multifaceted and concentrated this is drinking surprisingly well right now but will reward anyone who waits a few years. This is an unforgettable combination of pure terroir and a top vintage. With one of the longest finishes I've ever tasted (and by far the longest for any Grenache I've ever had) it literally lasts for minutes on the palate and much longer in your memory.

Cuvee de Mon Aieul is a selection of grapes from vines 75 to 90 years old. They come from plots on La Crau, les Bédines or les Serres, where the soils are sand and stone, covered in the regions famous galets. A pure and concentrated wine, the nose is very complex with notes of raspberries, licorice and spices. It is a powerful wine yet retains great elegance, and is at its best between 10 and 12 years of age.

Pierre Usseglio

Domaine Pierre Usseglio was founded in Chateauneuf-du-Pape by Pierre’s father, Francis in 1948. Pierre eventually took the reigns and, since 1999, his children have run the estate. The Domaine holds 15 small vineyard plots throughout the AOC, totaling 22 hectares. Only one of those hectares is planted to white grapes. The remainder, with a mix of rocky and sandy soils, represent approximately 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault, 2% Counoise and 2% Muscardin. Domaine Pierre Usseglio makes three red wines and one white.
