The 2007 Mazoyrès-Chambertin from Romain Taupenot is a superb example of this lovely vintage, offering up a blossoming nose of dark berries, black cherries, hung game, a touch of balsam bough, woodsmoke, a discreet base of vanillin oak and an excellent base of dark soil tones. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and quite elegant in profile, with a good core, modest tannins and lovely focus and grip on the wide open, pure and beautifully balanced finish. A lovely bottle that is still a few years away from primetime drinking, but is already quite accessible.

Dense with cherry, plum, sandalwood and mineral flavors, this red balances its sweetness with fine-grained tannins. Firm and tight now, but the lingering finish shows its potential. Best from 2014 through 2028. – BS

Charming and shyly inviting. Juicy in the middle, fresh and bright, with pretty good concentration for 2007 and lots of spice on the finish. Needs more time than the Charmes. (JH)

Classic ruby. A pretty red and dark berry fruit nose cut with ample animale, underbrush, leather and jerky notes as well as notably more earth influence that continues onto the more obviously classic Gevrey character as there is a robust and muscular quality to the borderline rustic flavors that culminate in a powerful and punchy finish of much better than average length. In 2007, the Charmes and Mazoyères line up the way their terroir profiles would have it as the Charmes is elegant and refined and the Maz is robust and borderline rustic. However in this particular case, there is just more underlying raw material that gives the Maz a slight edge in quality.
