The first time I tasted Lalama was in Madrid, five or six years ago, and it blew my mind—the old-vine mencía on slate created one of the most distinctive wines I had ever found in Spain. This vintage is still youthful, with fine red scents of strawberry—a beautiful wine that is, for now, laden with oak. What dominates the aroma is vanilla and coconut spice ; the tannins have been smoothed to chocolate richness. Still, beneath all that wood, there's a wine that could be great. Perhaps it will come forward with time.
