Ripe dark plum and cherry with a hint of licorice on the nose of the Raphet 2007 Chambertin Clos de Beze follow on a palate firmer and less alluring than that of the corresponding 2008, a sort of role reversal for which neither I nor Raphet can offer an explanation. The saline; smoky; cumin- and blond tobacco-tinged; juicily-, brightly-fruited finish here is what really convinces one of this Pinot's pedigree and pleasurable potential over at least the next 6-8 years. There is however no reason to refrain from enjoying it already. - David Schildknecht

Discreet if not invisible wood sets off elegant and lightly spiced red berry fruit aromas that intermingle with delicious, round and precise medium-bodied flavors that possess subtle minerality and solid length of the relatively powerful, linear and focused finish. This doesn't have the concentration of the old vines Clos de Vougeot though it is finer.

Strongly aromatic with a solid core of fresh red berries that gain complexity with air as notes of dry rose petals, sage and damp forest floor. First impressions from the nose carry to the palate, where the red fruit elements take on a plush nature. This has a long, pleasant finish that transitions to rhubarb and floral notes. Pleasantly balanced by zesty acidity and soft tannins, this elegant Grand Cru is drinking supremely well right now, though it will certainly go another 5-10 years in the cellar.
