Smith and it is the most interesting and complex of the winery's current releases. Very dry its elegantly silky structure frames intricate flavors of baked cherry cherry skin red currant root beer licorice and cedar with an elaboration of Asian spices and a sprinkle of cocoa. Really fascinates as it changes in the glass and best now and through 2013

Bill and Joan Smith of La Jota on Howell Mountain got involved with Sonoma Coast pinot noir in the early 1990s when they purchased a parcel of land in Cazadero and began planting their Maritime Ridge Vineyard. This Maritime Pinot Noir comes from a vineyard further south between Freestone and Occidental where they purchase fruit from Marimar Torres; it's a blend of the Pommard clone and Dijon clones. The wine's power is tied to its bosky fruit the tart cherry flavor bound to mineral tannins both generous and a little sanguine or sauvage. All of it is suppressed by new oak at the moment but there is plenty of wine to back up that oak and outlast it in the cellar

Medium bright ruby core surrounded by a lighter pink and ruby rim. Initial aromas of fresh toasty oak quickly yield to sweet cherry and wet earth all surrounded by cool fresh mint and dark black raspberry. Sweet and lush on the front palate leading to a dark rich mid-palate. Round and full in the mouth with hints of smoky game surrounding the dark cherry and earth flavors. This is young and just hinting at the complexity that will come with some time. Despite the youth it is an impressively balanced and elegant wine with a very long smooth finish.
