Wine Spectator - Wine Spectator, March 2010
Shows blackberry, fresh mushroom and Indian spices on the nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, glorious finish. Well-crafted as usual. Best after 2013. 3,585 cases made. –JS

The 2007 Vieux Château Certan has a nonchalant, earthy, well-defined bouquet that you might be tempted to locate on the Left Bank rather than the Right. Hints of wild mint, clove and bay leaf become more pronounced as it unfolds, though this is a Pomerol that is not inclined to click into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied, the Cabernet component quite noticeable with slightly leafy black fruit, sage and leather towards a finish whose patina of dryness suggests this VCC should be drunk over the next 5-6 years, as I cannot envisage it improving further. This is a "useful" and well-crafted wine from the very able hands of Alexandre Thienpont. Tasted February 2016. - Neal Martin

There is spicy brambly expression of the terroir is impressive and helps frame the black cherry and black berry fruit. There is a peak of black cassis in the mid-palate. The wine is wonderfully balanced with medium acid and a fine matrix of ripe tannins. There is a core of focused cherry fruit. A long 45 second finish has me putting this wine in the top echelon of the vintage.

Vieux Chateau Certan

Vieux Chateau Certan, sometimes referred to among Bordeaux enthusiasts as “VCC”, is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates of the Pomerol appellation. The estate is located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau, just a few rows of vines away from the bell tower of Pomerol’s famous church. The vines are planted on the famed Gunz terrace with soils made up of large, round pebbles together with different clays over an iron-rich subsoil.

The vineyard covers 14 hectares (35 acres) in a single block, and includes 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignon performs exceptionally well in this terroir and reaches perfect ripeness levels.
