High-toned, tangy aromas of orange, lime peel, fresh apricot, nuts and honey. The palate pairs great thickness with electric acidity, giving an almost painful quality to the very sweet apricot and orange fruit flavors. Finishes with extraordinary building length: I couldn't scrape this off my palate if I tried. Delicious already but should last for 20 years or more. This has the same level of noble rot as the 2007 Epicentre SGN, but the Barthelme brothers did not request permission to label this one as SGN.

An off-dry white, with toffee, crystallized honey and mushroom hints accenting ripe pineapple, papaya, yellow peach and clementine flavors. There's a lush creaminess to this, but it's partnered with firm, juicy acidity, resulting in a seamless, elegant expression, with a long, spice-driven finish. Drink now through 2031. 10 cases imported. –AN

Not declared as S.G.N. due to its miniscule volume, the Mann 2008 Riesling Schlossberg L’Epicentre smells strikingly and aggressively of apple jack, radish, and lemon zest whose pungency seems to crawl right up your nostrils and into the grey matter. Few Eisweins approach this level of aromatic sharpness and the bright invigoration and finishing penetration also remind one of that frozen genre. Yet this electric personality is embedded in a viscous, even slightly creamy medium. Spirituous intensity of apple, citrus oils, and brown spices lend this brash clarion call of eaux de Riesling memorable persistence. Who knows when or how it will settle-down, but it is sure to remain lively for at least a quarter-century. - David Schildknecht
