Decanter, January 2018

Montrose always takes its time, and this is still very much young and austere but with a commanding presence. It's a classically structured Montrose showing crushed slate, tobacco and bilberry and there's no question that...

jamessuckling.com, June 2016

The purity and precision in this wine is very exciting. Medium to full body, firm and chewy tannins and a long finish of currant and spice. Black tea and bark too. Better in 2020 but beautiful now. Decant before serving.

Wineanorak, January 2012

Beautiful ripe aromatics: sweet, broad, focused cherry and blackberry fruit. Pure and bright. The palate is fresh, open, mineral and quite elegant, showing lovely ripe fruit, backed up by firm but fine structure. A...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, February 2019

Big, powerful, young, tannic, fresh and bright, the nose, with its tobacco, leaf, cedar, menthol, and spice accents along with the bright, red fruits is in full force. Young as should be expected, this is a very good...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2017

Tasted at the château, the 2008 Montrose is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot picked between 29 September and 15 October. It has a far superior bouquet compared to the...

The Wine Independent, September 2023

There was rain in September this year, and then a lot more rain in October. Veraison was late and uneven, resulting in a late harvest from 29 September to 15 October. "We had to wait until October for the Cabernet...

Vinous, February 2018

The 2008 Montrose has a lifted perfumed bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, iris and limestone scents, nicely defined and opening with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm backbone, layers of cedar-tinged black...

Wine Enthusiast, April 2011

Powerful yet still retaining a sense of restrained style this wine is packed with ripe plum and sweet berry fruit flavors laced with firm dusty tannins. Acidity filters through the dense texture to give great freshness. R.V.

Wine Spectator, December 2010

This has a density that sets it apart with a pleasantly firm edge to the plum black cherry and currant fruit all wrapped with notes of iron tobacco and savory herb. The long rock-solid finish is still a bit tight but it...

Chateau Montrose is situated five kilometers north of Pauillac in Saint-Estephe, on a very well-drained and ideally exposed gravelly outcrop which runs for over a kilometer along the Gironde estuary. The 95-hectare (234-acre) vineyard surrounds the chateau, the winery, and the outbuildings, planted to a mix of grape varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 60% of the vines, with parcels of Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

Succeeding three generations of the Charmolue family, Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired Chateau Montrose in 2006. Acquiring a love of Montrose wines from their father, and keenly aware of the potential of its unique terroir, they decided to invest in their passion. Under their management, Montrose entered the 21st century with a spectacular reconstruction.

This great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estephe appellation. With rigorous selection in both the vineyard and the winery, Chateau Montrose is structured and tannic, yet possesses the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classe. With time, it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

The best vintages of Montrose are exceptionally long-lived, with certain vintages (1921, 1929, 1982, 1990, and 2009) considered to be legendary. The blend is roughly equivalent to the vineyard plantings - 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, with the balance from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is matured for 18 months in 60% new oak barrels.
