The compelling 2008 Syrah Verna's Vineyard Estate reveals lots of northern Rhone-like bacon fat and meaty characteristics interwoven with garrigue sweet blackberry and jus de viande notes. The super-complex aromatics are followed by full-bodied flavors. There is not a hard edge to be found in this both intellectually and hedonistically satisfying wine. It should drink nicely for 5-7 years. This sensational Santa Rita Hills estate owned by the Melville family continues to turn out gorgeous wines that are made and looked after by Greg Brewer of the Brewer-Clifton winery. The prices are absurdly fair for such quality.

Peppery to start then dark berry fruits follow on the nose. Blackberry liquor scorched earth and black currants just scream SYRAH! Plush and lush in the mid-palate with fruit flavors that continue to build to a soft medium-length finish. This is a palate pleaser for who anyone who enjoys syrah.

Melville

In 1996, founder Ron Melville's desire to grow cold-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah brought him to the Sta. Rita Hills where he established his winery, situated amongst the beautiful rolling hills where the grapes are grown exclusively in their three estate vineyards.

Melville currently has 120 acres under vine. The soil is mostly Lompoc dune sand, interspersed with clay loam and shallow hard pans of Monterey shale. The estate currently has 16 clones of Pinot Noir, 9 clones of Syrah, and 6 clones of Chardonnay - all on a variety of low-vigor rootstocks. All blocks are fermented in small lots and isolated through their entire period of elevage, which provides Melville’s team with an ongoing exhibition of how they can fine tune vineyard practices in order to achieve the most unmanipulated and site-specific wines possible.

Melville “grows their flavors,” using no new oak and adding only yeast.
