Tasted from barrel Amirault's 2009 Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil Les Malgagnes - from roughly 50 year old vines on a chalk-clay slope - offers a lovely combination of textural richness with lift and refreshment. Its concentrated ripe black fruits are laced walnut oil and citrus oil complimented by underlying suggestions of crushed stone moss and iodine that lead to a finish of luscious length. Let's hope this loses none of its seductive charm or poise on the way to bottling which won't happen much if at all before next summer Amirault says. At 13.7% alcohol incidentally it's higher than what he considers ideal. This should be worth following for at least 6-8 years. 90-91+ -DS
