I had the chance to compare the 2009 Château Chalon with the 2008 and 2006, and I think the 2009 takes the best from the other two years. It seems to keep the freshness of the 2008 and displays the power and roundness of the 2006, so it's complex and nuanced, but at the same time, it feels quite accessible and is drinkable now. But I think it also has all the ingredients for a long life in bottle. They produced 10,000 bottles of it in two bottlings, the second bottling with one extra year under yeasts, as they wanted to experiment with extended élevage. Staggering the sales and bottlings will eventually allow them to keep their following vintages of Vin Jaune under veil for one more year longer than required by the appellation. -Luis Gutierrez
