Decanter, February 2019

This strikes exactly the right note aromatically: it's wonderfully sexy, smoky, intriguing and tantalising. On the palate it follows up these aromatics perfectly with silky-smooth tannins and well brushed damson and black...

With a lot of fennel and earth character this is a classic St.-Estèphe, but on the palate it has a suppleness that's modern in the best sense. Needs time to soften. Drink or hold.

jebdunnuck.com, November 2020

A big step up over the 2008 and, I suspect, the finest wine from this estate in the 2000s, the 2009 Château Calon Ségur reveals a healthy ruby hue to go with textbook notes of red and black currants, tobacco leaf, damp...

Secondary notes of wet earth, tobacco, truffle, spice are just now coming to the surface. A bit firm for the vintage, with some leafy, herbal nuances accompanying the Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine is still young. Give it...

Chateau Calon-Segur, a Third Classified Growth, is one of the oldest estates in the Medoc, with historians dating its origins back to the Gallo-Roman era. The first part of its name is derived from the term “calones”, which were small transport boats that travelled up and down the Gironde estuary. The Segur part was later added by Nicolas-Alexandre, the Marquis de Segur who also owned Latour, Lafite and Mouton.

Winegrowing at Calon can be traced back to the 12th century but it wasn’t until the 18th century, in Nicolas-Alexandre’s time, that the finest chapter of the property’s history was written. The marquis declared his love for his favorite estate by his famous quote: “I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon.” The main feature of the heart on the wine’s label is a symbol of this love.

The vineyard of Calon-Segur is comprised of fifty-five hectares (136 acres) made up of one single block adjacent to the village of Saint-Estephe and completely surrounded by a stone wall. The combination of clay and gravel soils provides power and finesse to the grand vin of Calon-Segur where Cabernet Sauvignon is the backbone.

In addition to the grand vin, the estate produces a second wine (Le Marquis de Calon Segur), and a third wine (Saint-Estephe de Calon Segur) mainly produced from the estate’s young vines.

The Grand Vin of Calon Segur is the mirror image of its terroir, revealing both lovely softness and amazing intensity. The vines, 8,000 per hectare, are planted on deep gravel that lies atop clay. 54% of the vines are Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

The manual harvest is followed by both shake-table and hand-sorting. Fermentation is in temperature-controlled conical stainless-steel tanks with maceration for 18 to 21 days. The wine ages 18 to 20 months in 30% new French oak barrels and are fined with egg whites.

Allow me to introduce you to the exquisite 2009 Calon Segur, a Bordeaux Blend from the esteemed region of St Estephe in Bordeaux, France. This wine is a true gem, crafted by the renowned producer Calon Segur. With a deep garnet color and an alcohol content of 13.5%, it promises to captivate both the eyes and the palate.

On the nose, this wine offers a classic Bordeaux bouquet that is sure to entice even the most discerning connoisseur. Fresh aromas of dark berries, tobacco, cedar, and spice dance together, accompanied by a gorgeous mineral streak. As you take your first sip, the fruit unfolds beautifully on the front of the palate, revealing the true essence of this wine. Notes of crushed rocks emerge towards the back, adding complexity and depth to the experience.

The 2009 Calon Segur is sleek and lithe, displaying great precision, length, and structure. Its youthful tannins hint at its potential for aging, and with time, this wine will undoubtedly develop into something truly remarkable. It strikes a perfect balance between elegance and power, neither flashy nor austere, but rather a harmonious composition that showcases the art of winemaking.

Renowned critics have praised this wine, recognizing its exceptional quality and character. John Perry of JJ Buckley awarded it a remarkable score of 97, describing it as a "well-constructed wine" with terrific balance. Wine Spectator also lauded it with a score of 96, noting its gorgeous aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and licorice, as well as its lovely texture and refinement.

The 2009 Calon Segur has also been praised by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Vinous, and several other esteemed publications and critics. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, a reviewer for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, awarded it an impressive score of 96, commending its elegance and fragrant layers.
