JS 100

jamessuckling.com, March 2019

Extravagant and exotic, but still lively, this is a super-concentrated and elegant wine that's already breathtaking, yet has enormous aging potential. Plenty of wet earth and mushroom character alongside the cassis and...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, September 2019

Not a lot of wines leave me speechless from start to finish. But this wine did! Still deep, dark, almost inky in color, the wine offers off the hook aromas of smoked truffle, cigar box, tobacco, black and dark red fruit...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2019

The 2009 Haut-Brion is deep garnet colored and slightly closed and shy to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal sensuous notions of warm blackberries, plum preserves, mulberries and blackcurrant cordial with touches of star...

Wine Spectator, March 2012

This enormous young wine is among the most backward of the vintage at this early stage with iron-clad grip holding the broad deep core of blackberry cassis and roasted fig notes in check for now. The finish is a torrent...

Decanter, July 2023

Wholly different and evolving in unexpected ways. The colour is still a dark, youthful ruby, but the aromas are developing in a savoury direction with a pronounced earthy edge to the ripe blackcurrant fruit, adorned with...

Wine Enthusiast, February 2012

Solid, very structured, packed with dense and dry tannins. There is a core of acidity and darkness that gives the wine a brooding, powerful character. At this stage, it seems austere although it does have the weight of...

janeanson.com, July 2022

A little subdued on this showing, I have had better bottles of the Haut-Brion 2009, but there is still a clearly powerful fruit and tannin structure, touches of black truffle, cocoa powder, bitter almond, charcoal and...

The oldest of Bordeaux’s five first growths and the only property outside the Medoc to be included in the 1855 Classification, Chateau Haut-Brion was founded by Jean de Pontac in 1533. The name derives from the Celtic word briga, meaning “hill” or “high place”, and refers to the gravelly elevated terrain situated between the Le Peuge and Le Serpent streams.

History shows that as early as 1660, Haut-Brion wines were already appreciated at royal tables as evidenced by the purchase of 169 bottles by King Charles II of England, noted in the royal cellar book. Among the wine’s admirers are the famous London diarist Samuel Pepys, and Thomas Jefferson, who had distinguished the wine’s quality long before the 1855 Classification.

Arnaud III de Pontac was responsible for building the estate’s international reputation and for creating a new style of wine that is the basis for all currently classified growths - an era which historians have described as a revolution in winemaking.

Chateau Haut-Brion was acquired by the American financier Clarence Dillon on May 13, 1935 and has been managed by the same family since. Much of the estate’s success is also credited to the Delmas family, who have worked the estate for three generations. Nearly five centuries after the creation of its vineyard and 350 years after the first published mention under its current name, Chateau Haut-Brion remains one of the finest wines in the world today.

Haut-Brion’s grand vin is the embodiment of five centuries of tradition and plays a pivotal role in the worldwide history of wine. It is the oldest of the Bordeaux classed growths, the inventor of a new style of wine fashioned in the seventeenth century, and considered the world’s first luxury brand.

Typically more Merlot dominant than other Left Bank wines, the terroir of Haut-Brion is expressed through its empyreumatic bouquet (Havana cigars, chocolate, roasting, cedar wood, and so on). The attack is restrained, with precise yet exceedingly soft tannins. But the power of this wine is revealed in the surprising long mid-palate and even longer finish.

The 2009 Haut Brion is a true masterpiece from the Bordeaux region of France. This red wine is a Bordeaux Blend, crafted with meticulous care and attention to detail by the renowned producer, Haut Brion. With a deep garnet color, this wine immediately captivates the eye and promises a sensory journey like no other.

On the nose, the 2009 Haut Brion starts off slightly closed and shy, but with patience, it unfolds to reveal a symphony of aromas. Warm blackberries, plum preserves, mulberries, and blackcurrant cordial dance gracefully with touches of star anise, mocha, and damp soil. The bouquet is sensuous and inviting, drawing you in with each inhale.

Full-bodied and tightly wound in the mouth, this wine delivers a mouth-coating experience that is nothing short of extraordinary. Layers of black fruit and mineral notes cascade across the palate, supported by a very firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins. The finish is long and earthy, leaving a lasting impression.

This wine is built to age and requires time to fully express its potential. It has received rave reviews from esteemed critics, further cementing its status as a true gem. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it a perfect score of 100 points, describing it as a wine that needs time to unravel. James Suckling also awarded it a perfect score, praising its extravagance and elegance.

With an alcohol percentage of 14.5%, this wine showcases the richness and intensity of the 2009 vintage. It is a wine of power and finesse, with enormous aging potential. The complexity and balance of this wine are truly remarkable.

The 2009 Haut Brion is a wine that demands attention and respect. It is a true testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the winemaker. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for years to come, this wine is an experience that should not be missed.
