Long and tight. Racy. Lovely texture. 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 percent Merlot and 15 percent Petit Verdot. This property is really on a roll now, delivering racy and structured reds; it gives much more freshness and character to the wine. Score range: 93-96 –JS

It is not unusual that the 2009 La Lagune is a spectacular effort given the fact that this estate has been making terrific wines over the last decade or more. It boasts a dense purple color as well as a beautiful perfume of blueberries mulberries cassis white chocolate and subtle toasty oak. Notes of Chinese black tea cedarwood and forest floor also make an appearance in the singular aromatic and flavor profiles. This sumptuous full-bodied La Lagune possesses low acidity abundant but ripe sweet tannin and a long 45-second finish. Give this beauty 5-7 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades.

Plush seamless and sweet; full-bodied but not heavy. Pliant flavors of currant plum and earth expand to fill the mouth. Finishes with broad fine tannins and sneaky building length. Classic Old World claret from a ripe year: velvety sweet and long.

The La Lagune ‘09 has a lifted bouquet of violet, pomegranate, crushed stone and just a touch of orange peel. It is very well defined and exhibits impressive precision. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. This is nicely balanced with good weight on the firm, masculine finish, touches of balsamic lingering on the aftertaste. This is an excellent La Lagune.

Label

La Lagune wines possess elegance and balance, two features which typify the great Bordeaux wines. Freshness, harmony, and a touch of femininity grant La Lagune true personality which is recognized by Bordeaux’s greatest oenologists like Emile Peynaud and Denis Dubourdieu.

The secret of the La Lagune style lies in an exceptional terroir, perfectly mature grapes, careful vinification, and respectful ageing.

Winery

Lagune, La

Chateau La Lagune is a wine estate in Haut Medoc ranked as a 3rd Growth Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux. Its history can be traced back to the 16th century under King Henri IV when Dutch engineers started to plant vines on reclaimed land.

The mansion was constructed in the 18th century by Baron Victor Louis (who designed the Grand Theater in Bordeaux) and the estate remained in the De Seze family for many generations.

During the 1950’s, La Lagune succumbed to the economic crisis brought by the war, and the great frosts of 1956. By the time George Brunette purchased the property in 1958, only a few hectares were still in production. He undertook an extensive renovation program but was later forced to sell the property to the Ducellier family of Champagne Ayala due to heavy financial demands. The property is now owned by the Frey family whose other wine interests include Maison Jaboulet.

The Lagune vineyard is ideally located on one of the most perfect gravel hillocks and is organically farmed. It covers 80 hectares which are planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot.
