A wine that sneaks up on you. Starts of easy and then takes off. Full and very velvety with wonderful texture and an intense finish. Hard not to drink now but better in 2016.

Enters bright and lively with nicely delineated flavors of black fruits and minerals complicated by a hint of black pepper. This politely styled impeccably balanced wine shows a rather cool restrained quality. The smoothly tannic finish offers persistent violet and mineral notes. Due to this wine's typical refinement and understated character it is often underestimated during the primeurs.

A classic Pessac-Leognan the 2009 Carbonnieux possesses aromas of sweet black currants and cherries intermixed with hints of roasted herbs unsmoked cigar tobacco charcoal and licorice. Medium to full-bodied with more concentration than many vintages this surprisingly fleshy effort has more poundage and glycerin than this normally light-styled Bordeaux has offered in the past. Harmonious sweet tannins and low acidity give the wine a fleshy mouthfeel and immediate appeal but most of its aromatic complexity will not emerge for another 5-7 years. It should keep for two decades or more.

This muscular red offers focused flavors with solid structure packed with tobacco mineral and sanguine notes that carry through to the firm finish. Chewy austere traditional. Best from 2013 through 2023.

The 2009 Carbonnieux is an astounding success in this vintage thanks to the high percent of cabernet sauvignon (60%) with the balance being 30% merlot 7% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot and carmenere harvested from deeply sloping gravelly soils. Pale translucent ruby in color it features rich fruit with aromas of crushed raspberry blackberry smooth vanilla bean and loads of new oak generating aromas of spice box and pencil shavings. With all this fruit it is truly an elegant wine on the palate. Drink 2013-2023+.
